House bill provides framework for telemedicine

State Rep. Travis Cummings filed HB 751 Tuesday to set some ground rules for telemedicine in Florida. The Orange Park Republican’s proposal is a pared-down version of a Senate bill.

If passed, the bill allows the licensing of telemedicine providers from other states, saying providers can be in any location while providing services. The measure holds telemedicine providers to the same standards as in-person care providers.

As Cummings’ bill makes it through the House, lawmakers consider telemedicine as one way to address the shortage of primary-care physicians in Florida. Another proposal (SPB 7028) offers higher regulatory requirements than the House bill; the Senate Health Policy Committee will consider that bill next week
