Lone Democrat in SD 17, Wes Johnson, withdraws; local parties will be asked to fill slot

Democrat Wes Johnson has withdrawn from the race for Senate District 17, complicating an already contentious race for the seat currently held by Sen. Jim Norman.

Johnson notified the Division of Elections on August 1 he intended to withdraw from the race, starting in motion the process by which the local Hillsborough and Pasco County Democratic must select a replacement for Johnson.

Hillsborough Democratic Executive Committee Chairman Chris Mitchell said, “We are very disappointed that Wes has decided not to move forward with his campaign and wish him the best moving forward”

Republicans John Korsack, John Legg and Rob Wallace are the contenders for the GOP nomination which will be decided on August 14.
