Vandals destroy ‘Repeal Obama’ billboard in Sarasota just two days after it went up; reward offered for information

By on August 19, 2012

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information which leads to the arrest of those who vandalized a newly-installed billboard in Sarasota that reads “Repeal Obama.”

The billboard, paid for by the Sarasota Republican Party, just went up on Friday, but by Sunday was found to be violently defaced.

Sarasota GOP chairman Joe Gruters was, as expected, upset by the incident, “The President has done all he can to distract people away from the real issues that we are facing as a nation,” said Gruters. Now we are facing the Chicago thug tactics right here in Sarasota.”

Those with information about the vandalism should contact Gruters at 941.914.2004.

    The two signs shown in the article are very clearly not from the same location. I do agree that people need to show respect whether you are liberal, conservative, etc. etc. But when I look at this article it seems you are saying the sign in the first picture is the exact same sign as in the second one but it is apparent they are from two different locations.

    Those vandals twisted that light pole in the second picture as well. In the first picture the light is facing the sign and in the second picture the light is facing away from the sign. Darn Vandals

    As Mysti states in the first comment, these are definitely two different areas. Now I wonder if it was not vandalism at all since the information given is not the whole truth. How would one know if one of the pictures was taken before the installation of the billboard was complete? I do not condone vandalism and I surely don’t condone an organization trying to fabricate vandalism.

    The jaw bridge is up in the back round.I just drove by it today and saw the news truck.That is same location.The light is the other light across the street the angle is blocking the first photo light pole.Pictures taken from slight different directions and angle.

    Maybe they are just doing what the sign said, “repeal.” Instead they repealed “repeal” instead of “Obama.”

    Of course, silencing of any legitimate political speech and outright vandalism are wrong. Assuming that this sign bore all proper disclaimers under federal law, it should stand and its destruction was wrong. To quote Voltaire (or whoever actually originated the observation), “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”

    “Chicago thug tactics”

    Again with the Chicago bashing. Do these people really want to keep bashing entire areas of the country?

    Hey Liberals: Statement on Vandalism to GOP Billboard in Venice
    Press Release, Sarasota County Democratic Party, 20-Aug-2012

    Sarasota, FL — A billboard installed by the Republican Party of Sarasota near Venice was vandalized this weekend. Rita Ferrandino, Chair of the Sarasota County Democratic Party, made the following statement about this act of vandalism:
    “The Florida Democratic Party, the Sarasota County Democratic Party, and the entire Democratic community believe acts like the vandalism done to the Republican billboard near Venice have no place in our political discourse. We neither support nor condone violence or vandalism or any other actions that limit anyone’s freedom of speech.”
    “We urge the Sheriff to immediately undertake an investigation to determine who did this and why. Until we know the person responsible and their motives, the speculation and accusations currently taking place will only inflame the situation – and in fact, can be as damaging and irresponsible as the vandalism itself.” ~SJ Husak At Large http://www.facebook.com/s.j.hUSAk CONSERVATIVE SPOKEN HERE!

    You took what I said out of context. I was making a legit historical point about racists in the south, this is just shameful bashing of people from Chicago.

    I think it’s hypocritical for any conservative to accuse any liberal of “hating free speech.” If conservatives had their way, there would be no free speech/First Amendment, period. I think that is shameful.

    “You took what I said out of context.”

    I took what you said as a DIRECT QUOTE from you (as I always do/have done).

    “If conservatives had their way, there would be no free speech/First Amendment, period.”

    That is an absolute joke… if ANYONE wants to squelch free-speech, it’s extreme leftists (such as yourself), who resort to “RACIST! BIGGOT! MOUTH BREATHING CAVEMAN!” any time one poses an opposing point of view.

    “But isn’t calling you guys those names US using OUR free speech in response? You have nothing”

    And, I’ll throw your own words back at you: You took what I said out of context.

    Part 1) ‘That is an absolute joke… if ANYONE wants to squelch free-speech, it’s extreme leftists (such as yourself),’

    Part 2) ‘who resort to “RACIST! BIGGOT! MOUTH BREATHING CAVEMAN!” any time one poses an opposing point of view.’

    Part 2 was only an augmentation to Part 1… NOT provided as the proof of it.

    Nevertheless, for many conservatives Part 2 is enough TO Part 1 (i.e. ‘silence’) them. But NOT myself, as I will continue to call out your hypocrisies, bigotness, and other such prejudices whenever I see them.

    Is this clear (i.e. ‘in context’) enough for you?

    And back to the subject at hand (as you always try to defer from the topic at hand when confronted with your own words and/or facts):

    For you to accuse someone else of “bashing entire areas of the country” is utter hypocrisy. One only has to Google to find your own words.

    (re: find your own words) But then again, maybe you tool YOURSELF out of context…

    Oh, and, you would have to agree that the vandalism of the sign was in effect squelching free speech.

    But then again, maybe not… as, if it’s a liberal squelching free speech; that’s NOT squelching free speech (when it’s directed toward a conservative), is it?

    You’re not even trying to make sense, you’re just a troll who thinks they have a point, but fails to make sense when they go to type. I will be honest, you as a troll are getting to me. It’s not because you are right, but because you are irritating. Half of what you post is just you quoting me and yourself and attempting to make a point and the other half is just you projecting (calling me a bigot, saying that I squelch speech). You aren’t accomplishing anything, so maybe I should leave again because I’m wasting my time replying to a troll who thinks that they are somehow making a point when they are just trolling.

    Welcome back! Albert Cirrus is wrong; do you remember these classics:

    (1) Ed Shultz, liberal commentator, wants to regulate talk radio (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/richard-grenell/ed-schultz-wants-congress_b_524347.html);

    (2) the FCC wants to regulate internet access (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703961104575226583645448758.html);

    (3) some liberals want to subsidize newspapers presumably with the same control over content as they demand over corporate boards and decisions (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/kamiya/2009/02/17/newspapers);

    (4) some liberals want to regulate conservative opposition as hate speech; and

    (5) in a University of Michigan commencement speech last year, President Obama declared that information technology and social networking put pressure on our democracy (he should have said a constitutional republic) presumably because his administration cannot control the free flow of opposing viewpoints and information.

    Nice try K, but none of those are attacks on free speech. Especially hate speech. Hate speech is itself a form of harassment to make people feel uncomfortable to speak their mind. So controlling hate speech is promoting free speech. While all hate speech can’t be controlled all the time, it can be regulated when directed at certain people to prevent harassment. Sorry K, it’s your side that opposes free speech and you need to stop projecting, I will always stand in the way of conservatives like you who want to destroy the First Amendment.

    You fasely accuse entire regions of the country as being racist (Goggle it, Sport, as anyone else can).

    You then say (and I’ll directly quote you here) “Do these people really want to keep bashing entire areas of the country?”.

    Conclusion: As usual, a typical hypocritical liberal elitist… who preaches “tolerance”, but whose words PROVE otherwise.

    Couldn’t make any more sense than that. People like yourself sicken me.

    Oh, and, back to the subject at hand (as, just like Obama, you LOVE to defer and muddle the topic when proven wrong):

    “Especially hate speech. Hate speech is itself a form of harassment to make people feel uncomfortable to speak their mind.”

    I suppose that in your own mind the billboard was just that, hence being vandalized ‘just’ and ‘right’.

    I’m only tolerant of people who tolerate others, conservatives are intolerant so they don’t deserve the respect. Don’t turn it on me because I call out bad people.

    It’s only “bashing” when it’s not true. Many in the south supported racist policies for centuries and it governed their politics, what is wrong with calling them out for it? I’m not naive, I refuse to believe that generational racism just disappeared over night.

    No, you sicken me. You are one of the bad guys, you shouldn’t be sickened by one of the good guys. Unless you live in a world where up is down and good is bad which is probably the case after responding to hundreds of your posts for some reason. Repeat, that is what it comes down to you troll, you are the bad guy and I am the good guy and that will always be the case until you change. I believe in people changing for the good and turning liberal.
