Billboard greets RNC: ‘Welcome to Tampa, a city run by Democrats’

By on August 21, 2012

RNC Convention attendees will receive a unique welcome on their drive into Tampa from the airport: a billboard touting the city’s Democratic mayor and city council.

“Ruth’s List Florida is proud to have helped elect three progressive, Democratic women to Tampa City Council last year,” said Ellis Robinson, Co-Founder & CEO.  “We want to welcome conventioneers to the Tampa Bay area – and remind them that this is a Democratic city in the country’s largest swing state.”

Ruth’s List Florida is a membership organization working fulltime to elect progressive, Democratic women to state and local office in the Sunshine State.  “Although women make up more than half of Florida’s population, less than a quarter of our elected officials are female,” Robinson explained.  “Electing women makes a difference.  Women are more likely to champion bills that protect children and families, the elderly, education, the environment and access to health care. Women office holders are also more collaborative in their decision-making – both with colleagues and the public.  And Democratic women do this better than anyone.”

The billboard’s message was the brainchild of Tampa author Doris Weatherford, whose most recent publication is Women in American Politics: History and Milestones, a two-volume work published by Congressional Quarterly Press.  Researching it renewed her awareness of the vital contribution of women to modern governing, especially in municipalities.  “Tampa,” she said, “is one of the few American cities to have had two women as mayors.  They deserve much of the credit for our beautiful town.”
