Tampa’s Mary Mulhern announces she is running for Hillsborough County Commission in 2014

By on September 22, 2012

With a change to her Facebook status, Tampa City Councilwoman Mary Mulhern launched her campaign for the Hillsborough County Commission in 2014.

“I’m in,” Mulhern’s status reads. “Filed to run in 2014 for Hillsborough County Commission dist. 7. Excited to kickoff my campaign after elections in 2012!”

The accelerated timetable for Mulhern’s announcement may have been a blurb that ran in last Friday’s edition of La Gaceta, in which publisher Patrick Manteiga writes that Hillsborough County School Board member April Griffin is receiving encouragement to run for the seat on County Commission currently held by Mark Sharpe, who is term-limited from running again.

Among the Republicans thought to be considering a run in 2014 are attorney and tech start-up investor Tony DeSisto and small businessman Scott Strepina.

Mulhern was elected to the City Council in 2007 after being defeated in 2006 by Rose Ferlita in a race for the County Commission. On the Council, she has been particularly active on environmental and budget issues.

“I will serve as long as I can on City Council,” Mulhern said, addressing any concerns about leaving early her seat on the City Council. “By law I have to resign effective on the date of the November 2014 election. I am term limited from running again for City Council. I will serve 7 years and 7 months of my eight year term.”
