The Florida Democratic Party is not wasting time criticizing Governor Rick Scott’s expected selection of Carlos Lopez-Cantera as the state’s new lieutenant governor.
Even though Scott has not officially named Lopez-Cantera his new LG and running mate — he’s set to do that via Facebook at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday — the FDP is describing CLC as wrong for Florida.
In an email blast sent Monday evening, FDP chairwoman Allison Tant describes Lopez-Cantera as “the poster child for what is wrong with Tallahassee today, an ultra-partisan career politician who spent his time in Tallahassee putting big corporations and wealthy special interests ahead of middle class families.”
Continued Tant: “By choosing a partisan product of the pay-to-play culture of Tallahassee in Lopez-Cantera as Florida’s Lt. Governor, Rick Scott is proving that he is exactly the type of politician he promised he would never be — more interested in scoring political points than commonsense solutions to the problems facing Florida.”
A spokesperson for Scott refused to even confirm the selection of Lopez-Cantera, much less respond to the FDP’s criticisms.
Lopez-Cantera, 40, is a former state legislator and an ally of U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio.
His appointment comes almost 10 months after Jennifer Carroll abruptly resigned after she was interviewed by law-enforcement authorities about work she once did for a charity that prosecutors have said was a front for a widespread gambling ring. She has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
