Back into the Tigers’ Den, I bag me a Tiger!

It’s been more than a year and half since I last attended a Tiger Bay luncheon. Actually, it feels like a lifetime ago. Perhaps the most appealing benefit of membership is the ability to participate in Question & Answer sessions with the speakers. The coveted “Fang & Claw Award” is presented to the member at each meeting who “slashes through pretension and prevarication” with the toughest question of the day.

With Mayor Rick Baker as the speaker, I knew he was going to be asked a lot of tough questions, but I had a zinger in mind that I thought would leave him speechless. I asked him: “Mr. Mayor, considering that no candidate with a mustache has won statewide office on their own since Senator Duncan Fletcher in 1936, would you consider shaving your mustache if it translated into a bump in the polls?

He replied with good humor. “I happen to think my mustache is so pathetic that I could run for anything,” Baker said. The Times reported about my question here. And Creative Loafing is running my blog post about it here. More important, I bagged my first Tiger in some time, taking home the “Fang & Claw Award.” This is ironic because the last time I attended Tiger Bay, all that time ago, I won my first F&C for a question I asked Tony DiMatteo. I guess I won’t go to another luncheon until 2011.
