Cities and counties could further restrict smoking in outdoor areas under a bill filed Tuesday to allow local governments to go beyond state restrictions.
Filed by Rep. Bill Hager, R-Delray Beach, the measure (HB 439) is the latest attempt to carve out exceptions to a state law that prevents local officials from exceeding statewide restrictions on smoking. Backers say it’s an effort to reduce litter outside public buildings. Similar bills were filed last year, but stalled after concerns that the restrictions would apply to sidewalks and other common areas.
