Charlie Crist says prayer has spared Florida from hurricanes

Charlie Crist believes in the power of prayer.

He recently told a group of real estate agents Friday that Florida has been hurricane free thanks to prayer notes he placed on the Western Wall in Jerusalem. He said each year he has placed them there or has asked someone to place them. The notes, he said, say this: “Dear God, please protect our Florida from storms and other difficulties. Charlie.”

He said he left the first note in 2007 during a trade mission to Israel. The following year, he gave the note State Sen. Nan Rich and this year he gave the note to a friend.

He also asked the group of assembled agents to keep one thing in mind: “Knock on wood. I would ask you all to say a prayer.”

It is believed, especially among Jews, that the holy site — the Western Wall in Jerusalem — has a direct link to heaven and, therefore, provides the best place for prayers. Crist, a Methodist, said he doesn’t take credit for Florida being spared from hurricanes. He credits a higher power.

“Time goes on — May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December — no hurricanes,” Crist said. “Thank God.”
