Florida Democrats had better get used to it because it may not last that long. The “it” I speak of is Gov. Charlie Crist’s “provocation” for lack of a better word of his fellow party. He’s the nearest thing Democrats have had to a friend serving as governor.
Take the latest proclamation from the man who wants to be Florida’s next senator: he wants a special session to amend the Florida Constitution to ban offshore drilling and craft a better strategy at using renewable sources of energy. Republican lawmakers are seeing, pardon the pun, red. The last thing they want is to trek back to Tallahassee, particularly for those Republicans who have openly endorsed offshore drilling.
The griping is hard to miss, even as many GOP lawmakers acknowledge that voting against such an amendment would be hard to explain to constituents who see the ever increasing threat of oil pollution in the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf State region and BP’s almost keystone cops response to it.
