U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio said today he’d support legislation to repeal any health-care reform plan that may pass this year.
Rubio, a former Florida House speaker, has signed on to the conservative Club for Growth’s “Repeal It!” campaign, an effort that would seek to undo any health-care bill passed by Democrats in Congress.
Rubio, who is challenging Gov. Charlie Crist for the Republican nomination, says the proposed health-care bill runs “contrary to the principles of limited government that have made Americans the freest and most prosperous people ever.”
Republicans have lined up against President Barack Obama’s health-care reform initiative, portraying it as a “government takeover” of the health-care system. The issue plays well with conservatives, who fear the plan will crush them with new taxes and degrade the quality of care in the U.S.
Rubio is mounting a surprisingly strong challenge against Crist and is drawing much of his support from the most conservative elements of the Republican party.
