Constitutional review panel cancels committee week

Citing Hurricane Irma, Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) Chairman Carlos Beruff has canceled the body’s first committee week that was scheduled for Sept. 18-19. Beruff also said he was asking the commission’s Rules and Administration committee to reconsider the proposed Sept. 22 public filing deadline for amendments.

State could tally 64,000 new voters in extended registration period

Secretary of State Ken Detzner on Tuesday night announced nearly 37,000 Floridians had become eligible to vote in the extra week of voter registration. He also said another nearly 27,000 applications were in the verification process, meaning the state could have almost 64,000 new voters on the rolls. Detzner did not provide a breakdown of new registrations by party. Rick Scott on Thursday night said the state’s deadline next Tuesday to register to vote is staying put. “I’m not going to extend it,” Scott told reporters at a Hurricane Matthew briefing in the state’s Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee. “Everybody has had a lot of time to register,” he said. “On top of that, we’ve got lots of opportunities to vote: Early voting, absentee voting and Election Day.
