The House Regulatory Affairs Committee approved a trio of bills that could reshape Florida’s gaming industry, mainly by ratifying a newly renegotiated compact with the Seminole Tribe of Florida and by separating pari-mutuel racing from the card games which have come to dominate those facilities. A panel passed all three bills sponsored by its Chairman Rep. Jose Felix “Pepi” Diaz by narrow majorities and with defections from Diaz’s fellow members of the GOP majority. The committee passed bills to give necessary…

Well, prepare to be impressed, she says: The Rick Scott administration is suing the feds for trying to protect rivers and wetlands. Why should water get special rights, Roberts asks. Does water think it’s gay or something? According to Jeff Kottkamp and Rich Ramos, the…

As he prepares to run for higher office, Bush now relies on his “education revolution” to make his case. But is Florida really a model for a national education renaissance, asks Dan Gelber. Jac Wilder VerSteeg says he has to believe Jeb Bush when he says he wouldn’t let…

Today on Context Florida: Medical marijuana amendment could sway 2016 presidential election, says former Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp. If the Florida Legislature fails to pass a medical marijuana bill this session the issue is almost certain to resurface as a proposed constitutional amendment. However, it is widely believed that in a presidential election cycle (when Democrats in Florida turn out by 4-6 percent more than in non-presidential election cycles) a medical marijuana amendment will pass. The emails are puzzling. The subject…
