Magic take FSU’s Jonathan Isaac with first round pick

in Sports by

The Orlando Magic have chosen Florida State forward Jonathan Isaac with their first-round pick in the NBA Draft. Some pundits thought Orlando would go with shooting guard Malik Monk  of Kentucky, but Isaac brings many attributes that can make him a star in the league. Isaac, a native of New York City, but a product of IMG Academy in Bradenton, was pleased to be selected by the Magic. “Man, it means everything,” he said about his opportunity to remain close…

FSU no match for Xavier’s excellence

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Florida State’s outstanding season is over. It didn’t just end, it came crashing down with a thud on Saturday. The Xavier Musketeers, losers of 13 games this season, bludgeoned the Seminoles 91-66 in the NCAA Tournament second round at the Amway Center in Orlando. Those who might not have seen the game might make the assumption that Florida State did not show up to play. That would be an unfair assumption to both Florida State and Xavier. The Musketeers, who…

Florida State’s 66-57 victory over No. 25 Miami on Saturday gives the 15th-ranked Seminoles a double-bye in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament and their first unbeaten home season in 41 years. But coach Leonard Hamilton wasn’t about to get philosophical. “We have to keep things in perspective,” Hamilton said. “We’re not done yet. We have a ways to go. Clemson’s 46-point improvement not enough to beat Florida State

Saturday’s 76-74 FSU victory was a far cry from the 109-61 pasting administered on Clemson three weeks ago, on February, but the Seminoles were still able to escape with a vital road win. The victory was only the second win for the Seminoles away from home in their…

The Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles men’s basketball teams face somewhat similar challenges on Saturday. Both will be on the road to face teams they hammered at home just a few weeks ago. Let’s be honest; the 13th-ranked Gators have the more difficult task, but the way FSU has played on the road over the last month, they will have their hands full as well. Florida heads to Lexington, Ky. for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff to face a Wildcat…

Both Florida and Florida State remained in the top 20 in this week’s AP Top 25 college basketball poll. But they are heading in opposite directions. The Gators (22-5) won their seventh and eighth consecutive games during the week to climb into the 13th position in the poll. They were 15th a week ago. Both of Florida’s wins against Auburn and Mississippi State during the past week were on the road. The Seminoles, on the other hand played only one…

Leonard Hamilton has some work to do to save FSU’s season

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Florida State men’s basketball team reached new heights in January. That is why February has brought about a long fall. What happened on Saturday, an 80-66 embarrassment at Pittsburgh, demonstrates some of the reasons why a once highly promising season could continue to go further south. It involves the two most talented Seminoles, Dwayne Bacon and Jonathan Isaac. It also, of course, involves Head Coach Leonard Hamilton. Bacon, a sophomore, was held scoreless for the first time in his…
