Pinellas GOP aims to have top presidential hopeful as Lincoln dinner draw

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner is set for March 12 at the Hilton Carillon Hotel in the county’s Gateway area. The event is the party’s biggest fundraiser. This year’s goal for the dinner is $200,000. Last year the group raised $140,000. Because it was an off-election year, however, that amount was record-breaking for the local party. Pinellas County Republican Party Executive Committee Chairman Nick DeCeglie said the group expects more than 500 guests this year…

Live-blogging, tweeting of Pinellas GOP’s straw ballot showdown between Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio

in Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Life has its little ironies. For me, one of them is the fact that I get along much better with my old Republican friends than I do with my new Democratic colleagues. I’d much rather have a drink with Tony DiMatteo than Ramsey McLaughlan. Maybe that’s why I’ve enjoyed going to the Pinellas Republican Executive Committee meetings (do the Pinellas Democrats even have meetings?) I’ll be at January’s meeting of the PCREC to blog and tweet about the straw ballot…

Marco Rubio comes to Pinellas to deliver the most important speech of the campaign, asking PCREC to ‘divorce’ Charlie Crist

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

I cannot describe the sheer sense of panic that is pervading throughout Charlie Crist’s supporters here in his hometown of St. Petersburg. At Crist’s beloved Yacht Club or at the bar at Marchand’s in the Vinoy, there are hundreds of Crist’s supporters who cannot begin to conceive of Crist losing an election (as if they forget that the seer-suckered one has already lost twice in his political career). To his supporters in the ‘burg, Charlie Crist is Tom Brady on…

For Charlie Crist, Pinellas has become his firewall

in Peter/Statewide by

Assuming that preliminary reports of Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio’s fundraising are accurate, and that Crist raised another $1.5 million or so and Rubio doubled his previous effort of $340K, the epic struggle for the Republican nomination will carry on into the spring, when Rubio and his supporters in the Legislature will bog down Crist in a disastrous legislative session. Marco Rubio is not turning out to be like Tom Gallagher, who Crist knocked-out early with superior fundraising. Rubio is…

Pinellas GOP outraises local Dems, yet both have same amount of cash on hand. In other words, where’s the money, JJ?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

For the first time since 1996, the Florida Democratic Party outraised the Republican Party of Florida. Unfortunately for Pinellas Democrats, that trend did not extend to the local level, as the Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee still crushes the Pinellas Democratic Party. For the last quarter: Pinellas GOP $29,891 Pinellas Democrats $22,700 Through June 30, the parties have raised: Pinellas GOP $96,598 Pinellas Democrats $33,882 But, the Pinellas Republican Executive Committee is blowing through money like I do at Derby…

Ramsey McLaughlin puts Wags to bed at Tiger Bay

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

How boring was Pinellas DEC Chair Ramsey McLaughlin’s speech to Tiger Bay this afternoon? Well, first of all, he answered none of the hot-button questions asked of him by his introductory speaker Jerri Evans. Instead he gave a rather academic speech on how to win an election. McLaughlin’s remarks were in stark contrast to previous appearances by PCREC Chair Tony DiMatteo, who seemed to relish speaking in the Tiger’s Den. To the best question of the day, one posed by…
