Pinellas GOP welcomes Paula Dockery

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

State Senator and gubernatorial candidate Paula Dockery will speak to the Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee on Monday, February 8. (It’s already been a month since Marco Rubio won the straw ballot of the PCREC?!) Also, Chairman JJ Beyrouti, who looked rather snazzy at Judge Thomas Minkoff’s investiture, confirms to me that Congressman Pete Sessions will be the featured speaker at this month’s Lincoln Day Dinner. Congressman Bill Young will deliver the keynote address, during which, it is widely speculated,…

Congressman Bill Young lies about, err, misremembers President Obama telling his opponents to ‘Shut up!’

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

In a speech to the Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee on November 9, Republican Congressman Bill Young talked passionately about how he “will not forget” President Barack Obama telling “those who oppose (his) policies…to just shut up and go away.” Here is the video of Young’s speech: In case you can’t make it out, here’s what Congressman Young said: “During one of his visits to Virginia, at a loud, exciting rally put on by the Obama campaign organization, (Obama) made…

Pinellas Commissioner Neil Brickfield confirms he is endorsing Marco Rubio

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Pinellas County Commissioner and GOP stalwart Neil Brickfield confirms he has endorsed former Speaker of the Florida House Marco Rubio for the U.S. Senate. Brickfield’s is the most prominent elected official from Charlie Crist’s home-county to have endorsed Rubio. Speaking by phone with Commissioner Brickfield, he insists he has been a long-time supporter of Speaker Rubio and that his decision did not come in the wake of Rubio’s impressive speech last night to the Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee.

St. Petersburg Times’ political editor Adam Smith fails to give credit where credit is due

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Two similar national stories about altered photos of Barack Obama, each with a local connection, have captivated both the traditional media and the blogosphere. The first centered around St. Petersburg’s Dr. David McKalip’s e-mailing of a photoshopped picture of Obama depicted as a witch-doctor, the second was about Florida state Rep. Darryl Rouson’s denouncement of the posting on the Pinellas County Republican Party’s Facebook page of a widely disseminated image of Barack Obama painted in whiteface, supposedly to look like a…

Pinellas GOP posts inflammatory photo of Barack Obama in ‘white face’

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I just found this photo on the Pinellas Republican Party Executive Committee’s Facebook page and have contacted Rep. Darryl Rouson for his reaction: Although the title of the picture is “Evil Clown,” and the image bears some resemblance to The Joker of Batman lore, how can this picture not be construed as a racially-motivated attempt to literally paint Barack Obama in “whiteface”? Or basically, the opposite of this: After the imbroglio over David McKalip’s emailing of a racist depiction of…
