Central Florida was the top destination of Puerto Ricans moving from metro San Juan to the mainland two years ago. New data released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that 6,200 Puerto Ricans moved to metro Orlando from the island’s capital in 2013. The New York metro area was the next most popular destination, with 3,800 former San Juan residents moving there. Puerto Ricans have been leaving the island in the wake of a severe economic crisis. in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Good morning, y’all, and welcome to the second half of 2015. So what do we have going on this morning? The biggest story in the world remains what happens in Greece, after the public overwhelmingly said yesterday that they don’t want more austerity regarding their financial situation. Last week the European Central Bank cut off access to more money, meaning Greek citizens have been limited to getting the equivalent of about $67 a day from their ATMs. What does the…

Look who’s speaking Spanish: Republican 2016 contenders bring bilingual abilities to campaign

in Top Headlines by

Republicans are bringing something unique to the 2016 presidential campaign: an ability to speak to Americans in both of their main mother tongues, Spanish as well as English. Democrats can’t match it. Previous GOP candidates couldn’t. From WaPo’s Dave Weigel: Lucas Baumbach, a Republican activist who is running for the state Senate in Idaho, has put together a wince-inducing video of Idaho congressional candidate Vaughn Ward and accuses him of plagiarizing chunks of Barack Obama’s career-making speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Ward — an Iraq War veteran last seen refusing to back down from his belief that Puerto Rico is a foreign country — has benefited from support from Sarah Palin. Continue reading here.

DMB’s Big Whiskey leaks, sort of

in Apolitical by

In a leak that could only happen in the Dave Matthews Band community, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King leaked. Sort of. And in Puerto Rico. A fan on vacation in Puerto Rico got a chance to hear a portion of the album in a Starbucks of all places. He produced a dicey recording of Lying In The Hands of God that seemingly confirmed that, yes indeed, Starbucks had a copy of the album. Naturally, every Starbucks in the free…
