The decision by St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman‘s administration to award the Callaloo Group to take over the historic Manhattan Casino last month was not exactly met with universal praise in the community – even amongst the mayor’s most fervent supporters in South St. Pete.
St. Petersburg entrepreneur Bill Edwards, in association with the St. Petersburg branch of the NAACP, state Rep. Wengay Newton and mayoral candidate Rick Baker, will open a FEMA Disaster Recovery Registration Center Wednesday night. The center is slated to be open 6-9 p.m. and is located at 6090 Central Ave.

Pinellas County lawmakers will hold their first public hearing ahead of the 2018 Legislative Session next month, the delegation announced Tuesday. Delegation Chairman and Clearwater Republican Rep. After the Hillsborough County Commission initially voted last month to keep the Confederate statue in front of the county courthouse annex, Hillsborough Democrats vowed to take revenge at the ballot box next year against all four Republicans who resisted the call to move the monument.
A Democrat has filed to run against St. Petersburg Rep. Wengay Newton in House District 70, setting up a possible primary for the first-term representative. Vito Sheeley opened up his campaign account for the seat on Friday and is the only candidate running against Newton, who took over for now Sen. Darryl Rouson after winning a three-way Democratic against Dan Fiorini and Chris Czaia.
