The House and Senate hope to strike a deal on budget allocations in time to get negotiations on the budget started soon, House Speaker Will Weatherford said Wednesday night.
“I think the hope is, of course, to be able to conference by this weekend,” Weatherfordtold reporters. “We want to give our members time to look at the budget and make sure that they have the opportunity to debate it and work with the Senate.”
While the details of any spending plan will be worked out among conference committees, legislative leaders have to agree on the total size of the budget and how much will be devoted to each part of the spending plan. Weatherford said he expected that agreement to be reached in the “near future,” but didn’t elaborate on what separates the two chambers. “I think we’re getting close,” he said. “Obviously, we need to get that done here pretty shortly.”
