The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority is taking steps to ensure its continued solvency. A budget proposal being presented to the PSTA board next week shows financial stability for the agency over the next four years. “It shows strong financial management and the health of PSTA to go from the adopted current budget’s plan relying on more than $2 million in reserves to now predicting a surplus of nearly half a million dollars,” said PSTA Executive Committee member Darden Rice. Among…

A $1 million ask by the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority will not be funded in the state’s 2015 budget. The Legislature agreed on an $80 billion budget late Monday night, but it did not include proposed funding for a Bus Rapid Transit study for a Central Avenue route connecting downtown St. Pete and the beaches. “PSTA representatives heard very positive feedback and 100 percent support from our Pinellas delegation, and our agency will keep working to find funding for BRT in…

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

PSTA is teaming up with Ferg’s to celebrate the day with a “Dunk the Pump” event at Ferg’s sports bar across from Tropicana Field. The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority has decided to re-issue its request for bus advertisement proposals following an official protest by Direct Media, one of the companies that lost out on the initial contract award. According to the PSTA’s CEO, Brad Miller, the protest and ultimate re-issue of the request for proposals stemmed from confusion during the procurement process. “One of the issues that wasn’t clear […] was exactly […] how [the vying companies] were supposed to submit a [bid], given that we…

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Tampa public relations firm Tucker/Hall was paid more than $400,000 by the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) in 2013 and 2014 to create a public education campaign for the Greenlight Pinellas transit referendum that was soundly defeated at the polls last November. One of the leading players for Tucker/Hall at the time was Tony Collins, who served as senior vice president for the agency. But after Collins and the firm parted ways early in 2014, coincidentally so did PSTA’s relationship with Tucker/Hall. By…

PSTA explores all-electric bus option

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

An American company that builds all-electric transit buses rolled through Pinellas County Wednesday to court the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority. PSTA employees hopped aboard Proterra’s all-electric 40-foot bus called Catalyst. The bus doesn’t look all that different than others, but it sounds a whole lot quieter and doesn’t require a drop of diesel fuel. It runs solely on electricity. Nearly a third of PSTA’s fleet currently runs diesel-hybrid buses. Those are the models the agency has been purchasing almost exclusively…
