Mitch Perry Report for 5.21.15 — A comeback for Rand Paul?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It may not have actually been the definition of a filibuster, but Rand Paul worked his ass off last night on the Senate floor yesterday, calling attention to the dangers of the National Security Agency’s surveillance programs. He spoke for 10 and a half hours, beginning at 1:18 p.m. and lasting nearly until midnight, calling it a day at 11:49 p.m. It was the second filibuster or near filibuster that Paul has performed in his first term in the Senate, and…

Charlie Justice is ready for all comers in ’16

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Pat Gerard’s victory over Ed Hooper in the District 2 countywide race for Pinellas County Commission last fall was a big deal for local Democrats, and not just because they got the better of that intense and bitterly fought contest. Gerard’s victory allowed the Democrats control of the Pinellas County Commission for the first time in a generation, and they’d like to keep that for awhile. With Janet Long, Ken Welch and Charlie Justice on the ballot (along with Republican Karen Seel)…

Central Avenue BRT funding was out, now it’s in

Transit backers in Pinellas County are celebrating thanks to an amendment adopted Wednesday that will get the project started. While the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority won’t be getting the full $1.25 million, there is a $1 million appropriation in the Senate’s budget that would…

(Not) shocking news — PSTA won’t be putting up another referendum in 2016

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Stop the presses! The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority won’t be taking another stab at a transit referendum in 2016. Well, you don’t say! Of course they aren’t going to try that again so soon. PSTA board members and Greenlight Pinellas backers are still licking their wounds from a crippling, embarrassing defeat just four months ago. Who the H-E double hockey sticks would want to go down that road again before stopping to catch a breath and, I don’t know, avoid…

Could Senate budget be a referendum on PSTA CEO Brad Miller?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Florida Senate has not placed a $1.25 million appropriation for Bus Rapid Transit in St. Pete in its budget. The funding would have paid for a BRT pilot program with express bus service running from downtown St. Pete to St. Pete Beach along First Avenues North and South. According to Clearwater state Sen. Jack Latvala, who sits on the transportation, tourism and economic development appropriations subcommittee, it’s not there because such a program would be redundant. “There’s a system…

Mike Deeson raw at Tiger Bay

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There were a lot of laughs when veteran local investigative TV reporter Mike Deeson took to the dais at the Tampa Tiger Bay Club meeting at Jackson Bistro on Harbor Island on Friday, but also a few bits of news. On former and probable future House District 64 Republican Jamie Grant, Deeson said that though no criminal charges were called for in a recent Hardee County grand jury report on Grant’s acceptance of millions of dollars of taxpayer funds for…
